Job Description
Lead profitable reinsurance underwriting operations for Accident & Health market by developing and communicating a strategic vision for department growth, setting team priorities and guiding adherence to quality metrics to ensure department risk selection aligns with organizational profitability objectives.

Additional important information:
1)A&H" portfolio contains mostly life & disability business - Medical /Financial underwriting knowledge, being used for annuities, IBNR's, disability reserving and claims processes.
2)10 years minimum of underwriting experience.
3)10 years minimum of reinsurance experience.
4)Experience with accident, life and health underwriting/reinsurance underwriting.
5)Languages (minimum): Fluent English & Spanish.
6)Ability and willingness to travel at least one week per month -
* 1st year : including training in Brussels and Panama; and
* 1st year and after - Regular (about 20%) to develop direct relationships.

Primary Responsibilities

* Manage a reinsurance underwriting team for specialty lines by overseeing and evaluating new and renewal business to ensure risk quality and proper insurance to value

* Foster a collaborative approach to growing the business by communicating with peers, identifying profit and loss trends, developing strategic portfolio growth initiatives and informing team on changing underwriting guidelines to drive achievement of department profitability objectives

* Capitalize on opportunities for continuous improvement by reviewing reports on loss ratios, conducting research on market trends and best practices and leading the implementation of innovative underwriting strategies to ensure organization is competitive in the marketplace

* Build, foster and maintain internal and external relationships by leading the delivery of training, utilizing individual credibility to inform on risk exposure decision-making processes and leading team to efficiently underwrite prospective business to meet service expectations and enhance organizational reputation

* Develop sustainable reinsurance underwriting operations for specialty lines by analyzing, refining and enhancing current practices to ensure future planning aligns with long-range business growth objectives

* Manage budgeted resources by anticipating expenditures, accurately forecasting resource needs/costs and properly accounting for expenses to meet requirements and achieve fiscal responsibility

Required Qualifications

Education:
* Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience

Experience:

* 10+ years relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

Experience
* Extensive underwriting experience is required

* Specific experience required will vary based on specialty lines of business

* Experience managing or leading others

*Increasing levels of responsibility

* Participation in industry events that support continuous education and superior technical proficiency and underwriting competence

Preferred Knowledge
* Advanced working knowledge of products and insurance operations, underwriting processes and procedures

* Advanced working knowledge of laws and regulations related to area of responsibility

* Advanced working knowledge of terminology, concepts and principles related to strategic planning

* Advanced working knowledge of market trends and current organizational strategies

Travel frequency:
* Occasional (approximately 5-10 trips annually)

Physical demands:

* General office jobs: Work is generally performed in an office environment in which there is not substantial exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Must have the ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time. Must be able to operate basic office equipment including telephone, headset and computer. Incumbent must be able to lift basic office equipment up to 20 lbs.
