Job Summary

The Global and Sociocultural Studies department is currently recruiting a student to join their team of professionals.

This internship opportunity will have an employee supervisor guiding and mentoring student throughout the experience. Student and Supervisor must review learning goals and objectives and participate in a formal meeting at the midpoint and end of the semester to discuss and complete Student Evaluation and Employer Evaluation.

By the end of the internship, student will have gained valuable practical experience, learned how to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings, and experienced real life challenges and situations.

Global Indigenous Forum Mission and Vision

The mission of the Global Indigenous Forum is to bring global Indigenous issues, voices and awareness to the FIU campus, South Florida and world community through activities, research and academic programs. Founded in 2013, this university-wide initiative envisions FIU to be known as a welcoming institution for Indigenous faculty, staff, students and Indigenous peoples from local, regional and worldwide communities. Through the kind contribution of Mary-Lou Pfeiffer, the Dunnick Endowment enables the financial support for this internship for FIU students.

Global Indigenous Forum Internship

Intern would gain leadership and management skills, as well as sensitivity to Indigenous cultural values and concerns. Assists GIF Director with event and committee logistics, web and media communications, faculty and student club relations, Indigenous Studies curriculum listings and descriptions. This is a new position that will have to be approved by SIPA and FIU Personnel Office. Twenty hours per week.

Duties include:

Events and Meeting Logistics:

  • Arranges for rooms, video conferencing, etc.
  • Communicates with speakers/presenters.
  • Coordinates recording of attendance.

Communications:

  • Compiles and edits GIF email announcements
  • Verifies the GIF/GIG web page, facebook, Linked-in and PantherConnect are in agreement.

GIF Web Page:

  • Regularly verifies the information is up-to-date.
  • Develops revisions and updates as instructed by GIF director.
  • Works with GSS web staff to post items.

Indigenous Related Faculty and Courses:

  • Prompts faculty to review biographical pages, course descriptions, etc.
  • Compiles upcoming semester course list.

Who May Apply

Students enrolled at FIU, who have been awarded Federal Work Study (FWS) as part of their Financial Aid Award package.

Student must be enrolled with a minimum of six (6) credit hours in a course of study leading to a degree or a Financial Aid eligible certificate, during Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.

Upon graduating, FWS employment must end.

Work Schedule

Hours will vary based on class schedule and needs of the department.
