The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Utilities Mechanic (WWS Operations Divisions)

General Description
Performs periodic maintenance and preventable maintenance to a variety of water related utilities operations in the County.
Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires one (1) year in mechanical maintenance/repair or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses Required
Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License based on area of assignment.

Preferences
Vocational, Technical, Associate Degree or higher in relevant field.
Wastewater Collection System Operator C /B / A Certification.
Back Flow Prevention/ Plumber Certification.
Machinist/Vibration/Ultrasonic Analysis/Vendor Pump and/or Motor Certification.
Welding Technology Certification.
State of Florida Class "A or B" Commercial Driver's License.
At least one (1) year experience working in a Water or Wastewater Treatment Plant >10 MGD.
At least one (1) year experience working on a Collection System.
At least one (1) year experience working on a Distribution System.
At least one (1) year experience working on a Wastewater Transmission System with more than 20 Lift Stations.
At least one (1) year of experience using Maximo or another Computerized Maintenance Management System.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

Repairs and installs water and sewer pipes, maintains consistent flow of waste water from residences to the master plant; operates various plumbing equipment and operates portable sewer cleaner pressure machines.

Installs, repairs and flushes fire hydrants; shuts off water valves for pipe connections and repairs.

Processes requests for service for contractors; assists contractors by shutting off water valves for pipe connections and repairs, and locates water main vales.

Performs periodic maintenance and preventable maintenance to retail lift stations; checks that pumps are operating properly and valves are working in accordance with their job.

Repairs and installs sewer mains; installs county cleanouts, repairs force mains, gravity mains and laterals; realigns and restores manholes; installs force main valves and installs valve boxes; cleans up raw sewage spills; repairs water mains and service lines.

Installs, repairs and maintains water distribution system including main line, service line, water meters, hydrant, leaks, water pumps; installs, repair and maintains wastewater collection system including sewage lines, lateral lines, clean/out, televise lines, and lift stations.

Responds to calls regarding the problems in sewer and water; maintains the operational status of wastewater (collection) infrastructure; maintains, rebuilds or replaces any or all parts that are in use on a daily basis throughout the plant.

Installs, repairs, replaces, maintains, designs, and fabricates plumbing and makes suggestions and recommendations for different pieces of machinery and equipment.

Performs related work as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals.
